It is true to say that most people consider their bathroom to be very little more than a room full of tile together with shining fixtures and fittings. However, with a total rethink of how it could be, you could transform the space into something to be proud of. All that is necessary is a little imagination on your part as to how you would like it to look and the accessories for the bathroom required to bring that dream bathroom to fruition.
Bathrooms, similar to every other room in a house, should be themed because it offers the space a mood and brings your personality to your little corner of the world. It is where you can state, intentionally, what is most important to you. There are hundreds of design subjects to pick from, including country, dolls, ocean life or even villas on the Mediterranean. The choice is yours, so select the theme that you want. It is a good idea to choose a theme that matches, or at least correlates with other design styles in your house. That way, it will not be overly busy, or out of tune with other areas of the home.
Bathrooms in many older houses were put in as an afterthought and are literally converted closets in some cases. If you are unlucky enough to have a small bathroom, you can still decorate to give the illusion of space by utilizing the right colors. Just bear in mind that with a small bathroom, less is frequently more. Both paint and wallpaper work well although, in a small space, apply neutral colors either on one wall or as an accent on a chair rail. If you decide on traditional white paint or paper, it is a simple matter of accenting with color using any of the myriad of decor accessories. Items such as baskets, framed prints, sea shells, scatter rugs and even facades will all add colorful accents without going overboard.
If you choose to put plants in your bathroom, then the perfect paper or paint color to set them off is a warm rust tone. You will however need to choose your plants wisely because some will not endure the warm steamy atmosphere or the different chemicals contained in the likes of hairspray, deodorants and fragrances used in bathrooms. The residues from these products will eventually stick to the leaves and the plants will end up on the compost heap. Assuming that you have a large enough bathroom, you could hang plants from the ceiling. Or else, on the back of the lavatory is another great location. If your tub is the type with a wide rim, try putting miniature plants around the outside and set them off with ornamental baskets and soaps.
Rugs and towels play a vital role when accessorizing your freshly decorated bathroom. For a feeling of sheer elegance, you will not go far wrong with hand woven or deep plush throw rugs. Nevertheless, when buying the rugs, take into account the type of floor covering you are putting them on since they can present a slipping risk when put on bathroom laminate flooring. To prevent this, look for rugs that have either a non slip or rubber backing. Try coordinating your new rugs and toilet mat in either matching or alternate colors. When mixed with a neutral background, different textures work well to make an inviting, cozy warm feeling to your bathroom.
You can pep up your bathroom with decorative towel racks and colorful towels too. Towel racks are available in all manner of finishes including wood, bronze, silver and gold. If you want to match existing baskets and picture frames, you can paint or stain wooden racks in whatever color or shade you desire.
Bathroom lighting is just as important as the decoration and accessories. As a matter of fact, light can make or break the mood of any room. Because water and electricity do not mix very well, your initial consideration must be safety. If you have youngsters in the house, I would suggest that all lighting should be fixed and inaccessible to little wet hands. That aside however, you can leave night lights on when the bathroom is not being used and if counter top space allows, a small lamp. You can then fit lamp shades that match your overall theme.
Lastly, if you are at a loss for ideas, look through some home decorating books or magazines for inspiration to get your creative juices flowing. You might well chance upon wonderful themes that you did not even know existed. It is your little corner of the world, so be as different as you want when decorating your home bathroom
