If you are doing the bulk of your business off of your web site, you need to make sure that it is not only drawing customers, but also has the ability to keep them there once you get them there. Knowing what makes a good website is key to your success.

The first component of any site is that it has to have the ability to be read by the search engines. Flash technology is great, but Google can’t read it. This means that your site will not be indexed and you will never climb the ranks. There are alternatives to Flash that you can use to avoid getting lost in the shuffle.

Readability is another aspect of the web site design that is very important. The key to this is making sure that the text and background color go well together. If people have to strain to see the text, they are going to leave the site. You want a lighter back color with dark text for best results.

With all of the design details in tow, you can now concentrate on the content that you are actually going to have on the site. This is probably one of the biggest mistakes that many people make when they put their site together. While SEO is important, going overboard is just as damaging.

You are also going to have to make sure that your site is easy to get around on. Imagine going to a great looking site and then having problems finding all of the different tabs to navigate it. You want some information and you have no idea where the FAQ tab is. Don’t try to outthink yourself on the design. Sometimes too much flash and pizzazz defeats the purpose that it is trying to serve.
